A family conducted memorial service for Calvin Junior "Sandy" Prater, 80, will be 11 a.m. Monday in Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy May officiating. Private family burial will be at Cheek Cemetery at a later date.

Born Jan. 16, 1928, in Thackerville to Isom Calvin and Leo Davis Prater, he died April 21, 2008 in Ardmore. He and Jewell Dean Burchfield were married August 22, 1944, in Madill. Jewell Dean preceded him in death Oct. 6, 1988. A sister, Hazel Merle Nelson, and his parents also preceded him in death.

A retired minister of the Church of Christ, he was sponsored by the Central Church of Christ to go to ministry school. Calvin was proud to have held wedding ceremonies for several of his children and grandchildren.

He was interested in drawing, painting and writing poetry. He loved to play word games with his children and grandchildren. He had a great love of life and smiled at everyone he ever met. He had a passion to garden and travel.

Calvin was self-educated and read the encyclopedia once while recuperating from surgery. He will be missed.

Survivors include two sons, Ricky D. Prater and his wife, Shirley, Ardmore, and Randy Prater and his wife, Marilyn, League City, Texas; two daughters, Sharon Messenger and her husband, Steve, Ardmore, and Brenda Ferrando and her husband, Don, Moore; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; and Irene Alsup and her three children.
