Born June 8, 1909, in Cooke County, Texas, to Willie J. and Mary Smith, she died May 29, 2008 in Ardmore. She married Robert B. McGoodwin Dec. 15, 1928, in Ardmore. They owned and operated McGoodwin’s Dry Cleaners in Ardmore for many years. He preceded her in death on Jan. 11, 1982. She married Wood Selvidge Nov. 6, 1996. He preceded her in death on April 23, 2000. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Nina McLain, Shreveport; her parents; three brothers, Ernest Smith, Ardmore, Jack H. Smith, Fort Worth, Texas, and Billy J. Smith, Dickson; a granddaughter, Sheryl Brooks, Willard, Utah; a niece, Nan McLain, Bethany; and a nephew, Larry Smith, Caney Creek.


She moved to Ardmore with her family as a small child and lived here until Aug. 1, 2001, when she moved to Shreveport, La., to be with and near family. She returned to Ardmore in 2005.


An active member of First United Methodist Church, Thelma was a volunteer receptionist and a member of United Methodist Women’s Circle, Love Circle, Cora Carlock Sunday School Class and the Friendly Neighbors Club. She was also a member of YWCA, Ryonis Service Club, Salvation Army Auxiliary and a Mercy Memorial Hospital volunteer.


Survivors include a son-in-law, Bill McLain, Willard; three grandchildren, Wayne Smith, Bossier City, La., Christi Breithaupt and her husband, Mark, Shreveport, and DeLana Martinez and her husband, Frank, Cartersville, Ga.; 11 great-grandchildren, all Shreveport; three step-children and their spouses, Glen and Barbara Selvidge, Fairview, Texas, Stanley and Sherry Selvidge, Edmond, and Sharon and Fred Vinson; Norman; and several nieces and nephews.


In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Thelma’s name to any of the following charities: Faith Hospice, Ardmore, Mercy Memorial Medical Foundation, Ardmore, First United Methodist Church of Ardmore or YWCA Mercy House, Ardmore.
