On Thursday evening, Wilson City Council members voted unanimously to appoint Elaine Blackburn as assistant city clerk/treasurer. During the special meeting at City Hall, the council agreed on duties for the position.

“We have to have at least an assistant,” Mayor Gerald Young said. “We are taking about making Elaine Blackburn assistant city clerk/treasurer.”

Councilman Ron Alexander said he assumed in the absence of the elected city clerk/treasurer, the assistant would take on those duties. Rutledge asked if Melissa Williams was performing any of those duties, and no one thought she had. Williams was elected to the position.

Rutledge motioned to pay Blackburn the same amount Williams had previously made for the duties, which was a little over $1,600 per month. Young asked Blackburn if she would do the job for that amount. Blackburn said she would.

Rutledge said the city needs to train someone to fill in for Blackburn while she is on vacation.
He mentioned Blackburn has children and said she might need a day off to take one of the children to the doctor.

The council also voted to remove Melissa Williams’ signature from all city accounts at American National Bank, pending the city attorney’s opinion.

The city attorney was not present at the meeting.

In other measures, council members also agreed to submit a bid to Wilson Public Schools for property known as the old city park on the corner of Oklahoma State Highway 76 and Buffalo Street.
