In an effort to help the community, the Ardmore High School Student Council will host a canned/non-perishable food drive at the Ardmore-Ada football game Friday night.

AHS Student Council President Rachel Simpson said the group is attempting to respond to an immediate need in the community.

“We have a canned-food drive later in the year, but we saw a need now and decided to do something,” Simpson said. “We’ve seen news about the shortage of food in the Loaves and Fishes and Soup Kitchen. So one of our student council members, Robin Tipps, felt it was necessary to do something now. So we are attempting to help temporarily with this food shortage.”

Simpson said the group will still do its annual canned-food drive later in the year, but felt something needed to be done now.

“While we can’t put some elaborate thing together, we can help out by putting a box at the Ardmore-Ada game,” Simpson said. “We want people to know that the need is urgent and we need support now. One of our jobs as student council is to serve the community. And if the community is short on food to help those who can’t afford it, then we need to try to do something to help.”

Collection receptacles will be located at both the home and visitors’ entrances at Noble Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
