Carter County assessor field visits to accept 2009 personal property declarations will begin Jan. 12 in Healdton. A deputy from the assessor’s office will be on duty from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at each location.

The deputy will accept personal property listings (farm equipment, mobile homes and businesses) and applications for homestead exemptions for those who need to file before the March 15 deadline. All personal property listings made after March 15 will carry mandatory penalties.

A homestead exemption is a property tax break for all homeowners on their primary residences. Once established, a homeowner is not required to refile on the same house as long as it is the owner’s primary residence.

Carter County Assessor Kim Cain said her office in the courthouse will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each business day.
