Numerous churches in the Ardmore area celebrated Ash Wednesday, the first day of the 40-day Lent period.
Bebe Bridges, Ardmore, receives the Imposition of Ashes at noon services at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. The ceremony recognizes Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, being the seventh Wednesday before Easter. Ashes are placed on the foreheads of the faithful to as a sign of repentance. The practice dates from the early Middle Ages. The Imposition of Ashes is common among Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Episcopalians and many Lutherans; it was also adopted by some Methodists and Presbyterians in the 1990s.
