The Love County Sheriff’s Department and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation are probing the deaths of a Burneyville couple in what may be a double homicide.

About 6:15 p.m. Thursday OSBI spokeswoman Jessica Brown confirmed agents arrived at about 3 p.m. at the residence of Carol Lee, 54, and James Lee, 71. Brown said a relative had reported finding the couple’s bodies earlier in the day.

“The relative hadn’t been able to contact them for several days and went to the house to check on them,” she said, adding  “We are investigating this as a double homicide but that could change.”

Sheriff Joe Russell said Thursday night it had not been determined when the couple had died, but said information he had received appeared to indicate the last time they were see alive was “probably Tuesday.” Russell described Carol Lee as a lifetime resident of Love County.

Investigators would not comment on the manner in which the twosome died.

“We’re going to let the medical examiner tell us that,” Brown said.

However later in the evening District Attorney Craig Ladd told The Ardmoreite he was in contact with investigators as the probe progressed. He did not comment on the how the couple had died but he confirmed at least two guns had been found inside the residence.
