Firefighters from half a dozen or more area firefighters battled grass fires Thursday that consumed hundreds of acres of pasture land and forced the evacuation of the residents of five homes in northern Love County.

Carter County Emergency Management Director Ed Reed said that Carter County firefighters from several departments battled a number of wildfires Thursday.

“It’s the same old story — strong winds and low humidities,” Reed said.

Fires were reported in Dickson, south of Ardmore, north of Lone Grove and near Woodford. Reed said the largest fire was near the intersection of Oswalt Road and Pike Road in Love County. Love County officials said five homes in the area were being evacuated until the fire was under control.

“The wind is blowing from 15 to 26 miles per hour,” Reed said a little after 4 p.m. “The humidity level is 10 percent in Ardmore and 12 percent in western Carter County. The wind is getting ready to shift from the south to the northwest.”
