Ernestine attended several schools in Carter County and graduated from Springer High School in 1940. She married James Roscoe Smith on Dec. 14, 1940. Together they raised four sons: Don Smith, Larry Smith, David Smith and Tracy Smith. Granny’s house was also a second home to “Seki” Sekimoto and, later, to his family.

As busy as she was corralling four boys, she was very involved with her church, Missionary Baptist Church of Springer, where she played the piano for more than 70 years. She worked as secretary of Springer Schools for many years where she played the piano for programs and plays. She also worked at J.C. Penney for several years.

Granny was an excellent seamstress and loved to sew for her sons, her granddaughter, J. Jaye, and for her great-granddaughters. Her latest projects were potholders that she gave away and “birds and blooms” quilts that she made for children and grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling and having people visit her; she loved hearing about other people’s travels, and anyone taking a trip was asked to “bring back a rock” for her rock collection.

Roscoe died May 10, 1978, and Granny lived alone until she and Vauriece McGoodwin were married on March 16, 1981. Vauriece’s four daughters and one son become her children. Vauriece passed away in April of 1987, and she married C.V. Gragg on July 17, 1989, gaining a new set of children and grandchildren. C.V. preceded her in death on Dec. 1, 2005.

Ernestine was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Jim Pittman, Sid Pittman and Carl “Cotton” Pittman; and her sister, Cass Dean. And her heart was broken when her oldest son, Don, died on Feb. 5, 2009.
