The young students at Will Rogers Elementary enjoyed quality time with their dads Tuesday –– but probably not as much as the dads enjoyed it.

The school hosted its fifth annual Donuts with Dad event Tuesday morning.

“It’s nice to spend the morning with my daughter,” Matt Howry said.

The event focuses on getting male figures to take part in their child’s school life and is a part of the Effective Parenting program.

“This is about continued involvement in their child’s life ... It’s a new way of thinking about school,” guidance counselor and Effective Parenting co-coordinator Polly Wilson said.

The fathers appreciated the opportunity to be involved.

“It’s neat that they do this. We didn’t do anything like this when I was in school,” said Charles Haskins Sr., who went to Charles Evans.

“This is a school system that encourages parents to be involved. There have been lots of instances for parent involvement,” Samuel Smith said. The Smiths recently moved to Ardmore from San Diego.

Teachers also saw the positive effect the event had on the students.

“The kids are just so proud. It really helps their self-esteem to have that male figure come with them,” Effective Parenting co-coordinator and library media specialist Lisa Wright said.

Volunteers were also on hand to sit with kids whose fathers couldn’t make it.

“I know what it’s like to not have a father figure, so I spend time when someone who doesn’t have that figure on a day like today,” said Harold Brown, the co-athletic director for Ardmore City Schools.

In addition to Donuts with Dad, today’s Effective Parenting meeting, which will take place at noon with a pizza lunch served, will focus on the impact a father has on child’s life, with returning speaker Bobby Upshaw.

“(Upshaw) has spoken on the example his father was and how he relates to his kids,” Wright said.
However, moms should not feel left out. The school will be hosting Muffins with Mom the Tuesday before Mother’s Day.
