Sitting at home one night, relaxing, Davis coach Marty Teakell didn’t expect this.

Teakell, in his 13th year at Davis, was replaced from his duties as boys basketball and girls golf coaches, effective at the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year.

He isn’t the only Wolves’ coach getting the heave-ho. According to Teakell, 12 other head and assistant coaching positions will be replaced at Davis High and Middle Schools to start next year.

Hobart’s David Griffin will succeed Teakell as the girls basketball coach and will also coach the girls softball team in place of Molly Chapman. All other positions have yet to be filled.

Calls to the home of exiting Davis Superintendent Monte Thompson went unanswered Thursday afternoon. The school recently announced the hiring of Rod Maynard, also from Hobart, as the new high school principal and athletic director.

“It was a surprise,” Teakell said of the decision. “The superintendent called me the night of the board meeting and told me that they’d took my coaching away from me.”

Teakell, 40, will remain on the staff at Davis as a science teacher. His boys were 5-13 this year in his seventh season as coach, after finishing 0-20 in 2007-2008.
