The U.S. Census counts every resident in the United States and is required by the U.S. Constitution to take place every 10 years. The Ardmore Chamber of Commerce is participating in the Census Bureau’s partnership program to complete an accurate 2010 Census. The partnership will provide residents with information both at the Chamber, 410 W. Main St., and on its Web site at www.ardmore.org.

In addition, the Chamber will serve as a location for the “Be Counted Program,” providing a means for people to be included in the 2010 Census if they did not receive a census questionnaire or believe they were excluded from a questionnaire completed by their household. The “Be Counted Program” will run from March 10 through April 10.

Mita Bates, Vice President of the Ardmore Chamber of Commerce, said that with just 10 questions, the census questionnaire will take the average household approximately 10 minutes to complete.

“Accurate data is crucial to Ardmore and southern Oklahoma,” Bates said. “Census information affects the number of seats Oklahoma occupies in the U.S. House of Representatives. It is easy to see what an accurate count of residents can do for your community, such as better infrastructure and more services. The result is a brighter tomorrow for everyone.

“The information the census collects helps to determine how more than $400 billion of federal funding each year is spent. People from many walks of life use census data to advocate for causes, rescue disaster victims, prevent diseases, research markets, locate pools of skilled workers and more.”

Those with questions may contact the Chamber at (580)223-7765 or visit www.census.gov/2010census.
