A 31- year- old Carter County mother is facing child- abuse charges for the second time in less than a year.

LaTasha L. Johnson was arrested by Carter County Deputy Matt Dunn late Thursday following an investigation into allegations she beat her 4-year-old daughter. Johnson was booked into the Carter County Detention Center. Formal charges were pending Friday. Johnson is expected to make an initial appearance in district court Monday.

Undersheriff Milton Anthony said the case was assigned to Dunn after the sheriff ’s department was asked to launch a criminal investigation by the Department of Human Services Child Welfare Division. Anthony said the child was injured Tuesday at her Graham residence when she was hit in the face with a belt. “The little girl was playing with the buttons on the phone. She (Johnson) apparently told her to stop and when she didn’t she hit her with the belt,” Anthony said, adding the case was reported to DHS when the child’s injuries were discovered at an area school.

“Johnson is already serving a 3-year deferred sentence for the same crime,” Anthony said Friday.

Carter County Court records indicate Johnson was charged with abusing a child on February 13, 2009. She waived her rights to a preliminary hearing in March. In June, Johnson appeared before Associate District Judge Lee Card, pleading guilty to the charge. Card ordered her to serve the 3- year deferred sentence.
