The first of what could be several Plainview Class of 2010 boys basketball signees inked his letter of intent on Wednesday.

Ben Lutz signed to play college basketball at the University of Great Falls (Mont.) The senior guard decided on the NAIA school after traveling to Great Falls for an individual workout in October.

Lutz picked playing ball for Great Falls over the University of South Dakota and Oklahoma State for academics only.

“It’s a small school and I’ll fit in there better,” Lutz said. “I liked the town and the people. It seemed to be the right place for me.”

Lutz averaged 3.2 points per game (sixth on the team) and shot 45 percent (third, minimum 40 attempts) from the field in 26 games this season for Plainview, helping the Indians to their third state tournament appearance in four seasons. At Great Falls, Lutz plans on majoring in physical education and becoming a basketball graduate assistant, in preparation for a career in coaching.

Lutz said his brother Jody, who was a collegiate swimmer at South Dakota, was a factor in helping him make his college choice.

“There’s nothing like college athletics,” Lutz said. “His experience pushed me more to a college athletics decision.”

At Great Falls, Lutz will play in the eight-team Frontier Conference. The Argos will return 12 players next season from a team that went 7-22.

Lutz and his family feel that the Great Falls environment and coaching staff will give him a chance to grow as a player and person.

“We’re excited he has an opportunity to showcase his talents and play in a good system,” Lutz’s father, Don, said. “With coach (Steve) Silsby, we felt good, that he’d take care of our son.”
