Murray State coach Randy Rutherford likes to go after local talent, and Davis’ All-State guard caught his attention.

All-Ardmoreite Co-Player of the Year Grant Hetherington has signed a letter of intent with the Aggies, the school announced Tuesday. The signing gives the Aggies south-central Oklahoma’ leading scorer in the high-school ranks this past season; Hetherington averaged 24.2 points per game in leading Davis within one game of its first-ever state tournament in Class 2A.

"He has a chance to get a little bit stronger,” said Rutherford, who added Hetherington may redshirt as part of a guard-heavy team. “He’s a guy who can play the 1 and 2. He has good skills, and he really shoots the ball well. He’s very competitive.”

Five of Rutherford’s nine signees are guards. The former Oklahoma State star also is bringing back James Harris, Tre Hawkins and Ardmore High graduate Craig Hawkins at the position.

Another Ardmore alumnus, Domanique Godwin, is transferring to another college, according to Rutherford.

Hetherington also considered Oklahoma Wesleyan, who is coached by Donnie Bostwick, one of Davis coach David Griffin’s former players.

Murray State finished 15-16 this past season, Rutherford’s first at the helm.
