Velda Marie “Kandi” Baker, 90 of Buncombe Creek, Oklahoma, passed away Thursday, June 24, 2010, at the hospital in Denison, Texas.


Velda Marie “Kandi” Baker, 90 of Buncombe Creek, Oklahoma, passed away Thursday, June 24, 2010, at the hospital in Denison, Texas.

 

She was born on April 26, 1920, to the late Benjamin Harrison Hogard and Quincy A. Roach Hogard in Gray Horse, Oklahoma. Kandi was raised in Burbank, Oklahoma, where she graduated from Burbank High School in 1938. She later attended East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma. Kandi married Ronnie Barto Baker on May 15, 1965, in Stillwater, Oklahoma. She lived in Oklahoma City, Stillwater, Anchorage, Alaska, and McAlester, Oklahoma, before she moved to Buncombe Creek in 1993 where she lived the rest of her life. Kandi was a member of the Eastern Star and of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed playing basketball, bowling, fishing, crocheting, making jewelry, cooking and was a great homemaker.                                   

 

She is survived by her husband, Ron Baker, Buncombe Creek, Oklahoma; son, Reg Self and wife, Vonna, Noble, Oklahoma; stepson, Ron Baker and wife, Lisa, Arlington, Texas; daughter;  LuCretia Holden, McAlester, Oklahoma; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brother, Bennie Hogard, Andrews, Texas; Sisters, Ruby Hogard, Long Beach, California, Maxine Kesner, Abilene, Texas, Mickey Frank, Carlsbad, California, Lois Scott, Kingston, Oklahoma, and Lorriane King, Yukon, Oklahoma.                                                       

 

Kandi was preceded in death by her parents; son, Steven J. Self; step-son, Douglas L. Baker; and four brothers, Ferril, Jerry, Johnny and Jim Hogard.

 

Graveside services will be Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at 10 a.m. at the Shay Cemetery, Shay, Oklahoma. Chaplain Danny Daniels will officiate the services.

 

Visitation will be Monday, June 28, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Watts Funeral Home, Kingston, Oklahoma.    

 

Services will be under the direction of Watts Funeral Home, Kingston, Oklahoma.
