A 67-year old man from Chihuahua, Mexico, died Saturday after drowning off Tee Pee Beach at Lake Murray. The drowning is the second off Tee Pee Beach in two months.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports show Monserrat Soto Gallardo, 67, drowned while swimming with his daughter-in-law at 8 p.m. Saturday in the waters off Tee Pee Beach. A wave came up from behind Gallardo, forcing him underwater. He did not resurface.

The report described Gallardo as a “marginal swimmer.”

“It could have been avoided with a life jacket,” OHP Trooper Michael Groeber said. “If you’re a non-swimmer and you get into trouble, there’s not a lot of places for you to go.”

Gallardo’s body was recovered at 10:30 p.m. in 12 feet of water by the Carter County Dive Team.

Gallardo was the second swimmer to die near Tee Pee Beach in as many months. Ronald Berry of Lone Grove died on Memorial Day while swimming near the opposite end of the beach.

Groeber said there is nothing inherently dangerous about the beach or the waters near it.

“If you aren’t a good swimmer, it can happen,” he said.
