At the AAU Junior Olympic National Qualifying meet last weekend, several Plainview Track Club athletes secured spots at the upcoming national competition.


TULSA — At the AAU Junior Olympic National Qualifying meet last weekend, several Plainview Track Club athletes secured spots at the upcoming national competition.

With the top four placers in each event qualifying moving on to nationals in Norfolk, Va., from July 29-Aug. 7, Plainview qualified boys in 12 individual events and girls in 20. The Intermediate girls 4x800 relay team for Makayla Miller, Mary Latimer, Brandi Hamilton and Alex Davis also qualified with a second-place finish.

Top qualifiers for the boys included Bryce Smith, Tanner Callihan, Andrew Leahey and Ryan Deisher, who each won events. Smith was first in the Sub-Midget division 3,000-meter run and qualified for nationals with respecive second- and third-place finishes in the 1,500 and 800. Callihan won the pole vault in the Intermediate division, while Leahey placed first in the Young Men’s 2,000 steeplechase and 3,000 run. Deisher won the discus and qualified in the javelin (fourth) in the Young Men division.

Other boys qualifiers include: Casey Keys (Bantam 800 and 1,500) and Robert Torres (Intermediate 1,500 and 3,000).

In girls, Madie Gray won the 1,500 and 3,000 in the Midget division and was second in the 800. Shannon Wilson (discus throw and shot put) and Davis (1,500 and 3,000) placed second in two events in the Intermediate division. Davis was also third in the 800.

Other girls qualifiers include: Mallory King (Sub-Bantam 800), Emily Peery (Sub-Midget (800 and 1,500), Brittney Davis (Sub-Youth 100 hurdles and high jump), Sarah Hanna (Sub-Youth 1,500), Skylar Sommerville (Youth 100 hurdles), Marybeth Balcerak (Youth high jump), C.J. Hornback (Intermediate 100 hurdles), Makayla Miller (Intermediate 1,500), Abbie Wallace (Intermediate high jump) and Kaitlin Moore (Young Women 1,500).
