Franklin Conway, age 76 of Purcell, passed away Saturday, October 16, 2010, at the Purcell Municipal Hospital. Franklin Delano Roosevelt Conway was born April 17, 1934, in Mary Niblack, Okla., the baby of six children of Commodore McConnell Conway and Lela (Nix) Conway.


Franklin Conway, age 76 of Purcell, passed away Saturday, October 16, 2010, at the Purcell Municipal Hospital. Franklin Delano Roosevelt Conway was born April 17, 1934, in Mary Niblack, Okla., the baby of six children of Commodore McConnell Conway and Lela (Nix) Conway.

 

He grew up in the Ardmore area where he began school at Dickson, eventually settling in Gene Autry, Okla. He attended Oklahoma A & M where he earned a Bachelors of Animal Husbandry. He continued his education by taking banking classes during weekends and summers.

 

Franklin married his high school sweetheart, Rita Deane James, on June 29, 1956. They made their home in Madill for a time and then Franklin was drafted into the United States Army. He returned home and they moved to El Paso, Texas, for a short time before coming back home to Oklahoma. They settled in Purcell in 1961, where he first worked as the 4H County Extension Officer, and then worked at McClain Bank for 32 years until his retirement in 1997. Together they raised their three children, son, David; and daughters, Susan and Deanna.

 

Franklin was a hard worker and a wonderful provider for his family. He was a loving and caring husband and father, grandfather, brother and friend who cherished family and especially his only grandchild, Katie. He loved raising cattle and showing livestock with his kids. His favorite hobby was tending to his wonderful vegetable garden. Franklin loved anything OSU and he was a member of the American Legion and the First Baptist Church in Purcell.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, C.M. and Lela Conway; his sister, Bernice Gray; and a brother, Howard Conway.

 

He is survived by his wife, Rita Conway of the home; his son, David Conway of Norman; two daughters, Susan Conway and husband, Billy Williamson of Oklahoma City and Deanna Korzyniewski and husband, Michael of Frisco, Texas; granddaughter, Katie Shearer and husband, Justin of Norman; two sisters, Nadine Marshall and husband, Gwyn of Powell, Wyo., and Louise Stephens of Choctaw; one brother, Gene Conway and wife, Pat of Ardmore; and a host of other family and friends.

 

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. today at the First Baptist Church in Purcell. Rev. Blake Western will be officiating. Burial will follow in Ardmore. Arrangements by Wilson-Little Funeral Home, Purcell.
