Ardmore police arrested a 29-year-old man Wednesday night after an investigation indicated his brand of child discipline had resulted in assault.

Officers responded abut 6:15 p.m. to a residence located in the 400 block of Woods Street. Cpl. Jason Qualls, Ardmore Police Department Public Information Officer, said Department of Human Services child welfare workers were on the scene when officers arrived. Subsequently a criminal investigation was launched when it was determined two children, ranging in age from 4 to 6, had sustained injuries due to what was described as disciplinary actions.

James E. Hicks was identified as the person who had allegedly assaulted the two children.

Hicks was not on the scene at the time the investigation was conducted. However, Qualls said officers located Hicks a short time later, arrested him and booked him into the Carter County Detention Center.

Thursday Hicks was formally charged by the district attorney’s office with child abuse by injury. He made an initial appearance in Carter County District Court, where a $25,000 bond was set on the charge. A spokesperson for the Carter County Detention Center said late Thursday Hicks had not posted bond.
