Ardmore’s Evan McGee is the man to beat at this weekend’s Class 5A west regional.

Ardmore’s Evan McGee is the man to beat at this weekend’s Class 5A west regional.

The heavyweight is ranked No. 1 in his weight class entering today’s competition in Harrah. The Tigers are on the short list of teams favored to win the 16-team pool.

Ardmore sends five state qualifiers from 2010 to the mat today, including Timothy Shannon, a transfer from Madill who was a two-time state placer with the Wildcats in Class 4A.

Shannon will wrestle at 130 pounds. He is joined by last year’s state qualifiers Jimmy Langford (119), Elijah Cary (135) and Sam Schrader (140).

“We’re confident in our conditioning and our weight’s under control,” Ardmore coach Richard Dabbs said. “We’re ready to compete.”

Another state qualifier from last season, Aron Yelton, will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury. Ardmore will leave his spot at 125 vacant.

“It’s a pretty solid weight class,” Dabbs said. “To ask someone to step into a weight class he hasn’t been in is hard.”

In 4A, Madill may have lost Shannon, but return a state placer in Isaac Green. The senior was third in state a year ago at 171, but will wrestle at 189 for the Wildcats at regionals.

Weigh-in is at 10 a.m. with matches starting at noon.

PHS onward without Winnard
After losing state contender Tyler Winnard for the season, Plainview has regrouped to take its shot at the 3A west regional at Kingfisher.

The Indians return one state alternate from 2010 in sophomore Cade Wheelwright at 119 pounds. Winnard, who was the No. 1 heavyweight in 3A entering regionals, suffered a torn ACL in on Jan. 26 at the Mid-Western Conference Tournament.

“He had a solid chance of winning state this year,” Plainview coach Tony Willoughby said. “As a coach, you hate that for the kids.”

Plainview will face a challenging 26-team field that includes Davis, Sulphur and dual state champion and seven-time defending team state title holder Perry. Davis and Sulphur have their own pair of state contenders in 171-pounder Logan Webb and 215-pounder Braden Ruth.

Webb qualified for state last season while Ruth has had an impressive freshman campaign for the Wolves.

Willoughby says the Indians still have opportunities at state places despite not having their only senior.

“Every kid has his own goals,” Willoughby said. “They hate it for Tyler, but understand they have their own goals they’re trying to accomplish.

“If we wrestle the best we can, we could have a few qualify.”
