Trailing 31-24 a minute into the fourth period, the Plainview girls scored the game’s final 17 points to come away with a 41-31 win over Marietta Saturday night in their Class 3A District 2 championship game Saturday.

Plainview improved to 9-13 with the win and will host Coalgate Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. in regional competition. Marietta (9-12) will play Kingston in a loser’s bracket contest Thursday afternoon at 1:30 p.m., also at the Plainview Activity Center. Regionals move to Lindsay for Friday and Saturday action.

Marietta had led almost from the beginning, and its seven-point lead early in the fourth was its largest advantage. One-of-two from the line by Kenzie Hunt and a 3-point bucket by Plainview’s Jourdan Weatherford from the right wing cut the lead to three.

Weatherford got the ball in to Abbie Wallace for a lay-up to make it one-point game, and a 3 by Hunt gave Plainview its first lead since early in the game at 33-31.

“I thought one of the keys was our rebounding in the second half,” Plainview coach Andy Bloodworth said. “We stuck to our game plan, and down the stretch it started to pay off for us. We limited them to one shot and out at their end, and we ran our offense well when we got the ball. We showed patience offensively where we didn’t in the first half. And that patience ultimately gave us good shot opportunities down the stretch.”

Following Hunt’s 3-point bucket, no field goals were made over the final 3:30. Marietta, who got an early 3 by Hannah Caldwell, went cold from the floor.

The final eight points were all scored by Hunt from the free-throw line.

Abbie Wallace led Plainview with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Hunt finished with 15 points, including 9-of-14 from the line.

Caldwall paced Marietta with 13 points. Jacoda Muller and Tysia Manuel each had 12 rebounds for Marietta.
