Turner’s 71-21 Class A regional loss to Velma-Alma on Friday turned ugly when the Falcons had two players ejected after a fight involving fans from both schools.

According to Turner boys coach Steve Lee, fans of Velma-Alma were confronted by two Turner supporters who entered the Velma-Alma fan section midway through the second quarter. Turner players soon after joined the altercation.

Two players were ejected and Lee benched two others, leaving the Falcons with five to finish out the game.

At the time of the fight, Turner trailed 25-8.

“Some fans didn’t like it (Velma-Alma heckling) and things took off from there,” Lee said Sunday. “It’s one of those things you never want to see happen.”

In addition to two of his players, Lee said several fans from both schools were ejected from the game.

“I wasn’t very pleased with the actions of the players, but the five I finished the game with I’m very proud of,” Lee said. “The ones involved in the fight can’t be tolerated and won’t be tolerated.

“There’s not much discipline we can do in terms of basketball now, but I can tell you there will be discipline.”

Velma-Alma led 39-10 at halftime. Alec Hicks led the Falcons (13-15) with six points and Ryan Hurst added five.

Turner girls’ record season ends
LAWTON — Turner’s record-setting season came to a close Saturday, as the girls lost 58-40 to Merritt in the Class A Lawton Regional consolation final.

The Falcons kept the game close until the fourth quarter, when Merritt outscored Turner 22-13. Merritt was a state tournament qualifier in Class A last year.

“It was a four-, six-point ball game all the way until we started fouling,” Turner coach Shane Hill said. “They were deep and athletic. We played with them up until we got into foul trouble.”

Conner Harmon led the Falcons with 13 points, and Andi McGill and Taylor Foster each scored 10.

The Falcons finished 27-2, with both losses coming in the regional round.

“Last year, we were 17-8, the year before we were 3-20,” Hill said. “We’ve lost one home game in the last two years, so it’s starting to turn around. We’re starting to feel like we’re a pretty decent ball club.

“We’ve got every body coming back except for one so it’s all upside.”
