J.D. and Mendy Spohn,  2011 March for Babies co-chairs, talked about why they support the March of Dimes and its annual fundraiser — the March for Babies — during a kickoff luncheon for team captains and other supporters Thursday at Dornick Hills Country Club.

The theme for the 2011 March for Babies is “Working Together for Stronger, Healthier Babies.” The event is scheduled for May 7 in Central Park.

J.D. Spohn is Ardmore City manager, and Mendy Spohn is Administrative Director for the Carter County Health Department. They are the parents of a healthy one-year-old girl.

“We really believe in the mission of the March of Dimes, and we always have,” Mendy Spohn said.
She said the state health department’s new “Preparing for a Lifetime: It’s Everyone’s Responsibility” initiative is designed to improve health outcomes in the state. The department supports the MOD’s mission of preventing birth defects and premature births and reducing infant mortality rates. Premature births impact one in eight Oklahoma families. And more than 13 percent of Oklahoma babies are born too early compared to 12.3 percent nationwide.

Board of Director Brandon Twyford, a Citizens Bank and Trust vice president, recognized Pam Moore for receiving the Dollar General Community Service Award. A $2,500 check will be presented to MOD in her name. Other board officers are Vice Chair Cindy Crane of the Noble Foundation and Secretary Deborah Norton of Noble Energy.

Twyford also recognized the following top teams from last year’s event.
