Virgil Don Hightower 63, passed away Thursday, February 24, 2011, at Ardmore, Okla. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at Griffin ~ Hillcrest Chapel, Ardmore with Pastor Charles Ryan officiating.


Virgil Don Hightower 63, passed away Thursday, February 24, 2011, at Ardmore, Okla. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at Griffin ~ Hillcrest Chapel, Ardmore with Pastor Charles Ryan officiating.

 

Virgil was born on September 19, 1947, in Arthur City, Texas, to Virgil Ladell Hightower and Thelma Mae (Hawkins) Hightower.

 

Virgil attended Palo Duro High School in Amarillo, Texas, graduating in 1965. After school, he met and married his first wife, Thelma Scott. He later joined the United States Navy serving his country for 12 years until the death of Thelma. He then received his honorable discharge to care for his children in 1976. He returned to Amarillo, where he took a position with Dulaney’s Auto Salvage for the next 15 years. During this time, he married Sandra Morris and moved his family to Ardmore in 1991, where he attended Murray State College studying Business and received his Associate’s Degree. He took a position with Wal-Mart where he worked in receiving until he was diagnosed with cancer and took an early retirement in 2008. During his employment with Wal-Mart, Sandra passed away in 2003. He then married Mary Prewitt on February 14, 2007, in Ardmore, Okla. He was a member of the Full Gospel Light House Church.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Thelma Hightower and Sandra Jeanean Hightower; son, Virgil Dale Hightower; and one brother, Phillip Earl Hightower.

 

Virgil is survived by his wife, Mary of the home; two daughters, Tina Cook and husband, Will of Carlsbad, N.M., and Barbara Hightower of Ardmore; three sons, Shannon Hightower of Texas, Victor Hightower of Carlsbad, and Timothy Hightower and wife, Katie of Marietta, Okla.; three step-sons, Vincent Prewitt and Gunner Prewitt both of Ardmore, and Tommy Barnett of Carlsbad,;  one step-daughter, Tammy Barnett of Carlsbad; 11 grandchildren; one brother, Edward Powell and wife, Terri of Amarillo, Texas; father-in-law, William Morris of Amarillo; and close friend, who Virgil considered a son, Juan Rueda of Marietta, Okla.; and numerous nieces and nephews as well as a host of friends.
 Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday, February 28, 2011, at Griffin ~ Hillcrest Funeral Home, Ardmore.
