Mr. Robert Ovington Dunn, 76, formerly of Bartlesville, died at 9:50 p.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2011, at his home in Ardmore.


Mr. Robert Ovington Dunn, 76, formerly of Bartlesville, died at 9:50 p.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2011, at his home in Ardmore.

 

Funeral services for Mr. Dunn will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Stumpff Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rick Baggett of the First Presbyterian Church in Ardmore officiating. Following cremation, interment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery directed by the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory.

Mr. Dunn was born in Alliance, Ohio, on September 24, 1934. He is the son of Robert Seth and Genevieve Anne (Ovington) Dunn. While growing up in Salem, Ohio, he was a Boy Scout and graduated from Salem High School. He then attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where he was the principal trumpet player for the Cornell University Band. He graduated in 1957 with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. During his time at Cornell, he was a member of the Alpha Chi Sigma Fraternity where he served as Master Alchemist for two years.

 

He was married to Marilyn Gene Dodge on December 27, 1957, in Salem, Ohio. Bob and Marilyn established their home in Bartlesville where Bob had began employment with Phillips Petroleum Company. Bob was active as a chemical engineer with Phillips until his retirement in 2000 and he continued as a contract engineer for another 10 years. During his employment with Phillips Petroleum Company, Bob was instrumental in the development and commercialization of the STAR process which was eventually sold to Krupp Engineering.

 

Following his retirement, Bob and Marilyn established their retirement home on Grand Lake at Grove, Oklahoma. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bartlesville where he had been an Elder as well as a Sunday school teacher. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed the outdoors and reading. Bob also played trumpet in the Bartlesville Symphony Orchestra and set a family precedent of music education which extended to his children and grandchildren. He was very family oriented and enjoyed spending most of his free time visiting family in Ardmore and Peoria, Illinois.

 

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn in 2003.

 

He is survived by one son, Robert Ovington Dunn Jr. and his wife, Karen of Peoria, Illinois; two daughters, Dr. Barbara Dunn Nightengale and her husband, Dr. Doug Nightengale and Diana Dunn, all of Ardmore, Oklahoma; one brother, Wendell Dunn of Salem, Ohio; five grandchildren, Seth Nightengale, Wil Nightengale, Emma Nightengale, Rasheed Alhassan and Aisha Alhassan; and two great-grandchildren.

 

In addition to his wife, Mr. Dunn was preceded in death by his parents.
