  • The Southern Financial Group American Legion Ardmore Cardinals pushed their winning streak to seven games with three wins in the Triple Play Tournament at Craig Ranch on Friday and Saturday.
The Cardinals won two games on Friday and another on Saturday to push their record to 20-10, with wins in nine of their last 10 games. The Cardinals’ second game on Saturday was canceled midway through due to rain. Ardmore trailed 8-4 to the Dallas-Fort Worth Twins after 4 1/2 innings before the game was called.
The Cardinals play today at 3:30 p.m., with University of Oklahoma signee Carson McPherson taking the mound.
“We didn’t hit it well this tournament, but hopefully we’ll get on track tomorrow,” Cardinals coach Jake Melton said. “We hadn’t had a seven-game win streak since I’ve been doing it (coaching American Legion).”
The Cardinals came up with three solid pitching performances Friday and Saturday, allowing no more than three runs in each contest.
Alec Hetherington (Davis) tossed a complete game eight-hitter in a 4-3 win over the Pro Source A’s on Friday. Hetherington went all seven innings, striking out six and walking two.
Against Pro Source, Cash Miller (Coleman/Murray State) and Caleb McDonald (Kingston/Murray State) were each 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
“He threw the ball really well and got ahead of hitters,” Melton said of Hetherington.
Against the MBB Sluggers, Brian Greisman (Plainview/Central Oklahoma) and Hunter Evans (Coleman) combined to hold the Sluggers to five hits in a 6-3 victory.
Greisman gave up seven hits, struck out seven batters and walked four in 5 1/3 innings to pick up his fourth win of the summer. Evans came on in relief for 2/3 of a inning, recording a strikeout. Together, the duo held the Sluggers without an extra-base hit.
McPherson was 1-for-2 with three stolen bases and a double. McDonald drove in a run on a double and Chase Crites (Caney) had two RBIs for the Cardinals.
Evans returned against the Fort Worth Diablos to pitch six strong innings in a 6-3 win on Saturday. Evans gave up three hits, struck out five and walked one to improve to 3-2. Blake Hoke (Victory Life) came on in the seventh to strike out one and walk one.
McPherson was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs and McDonald added a solo home run in the fourth inning. Blake Campo (Plainview/Murray State) added four stolen bases, including a steal of home in the third inning to put Ardmore ahead for good at 3-2.
“One of the big keys is we’ve played really good defense through this deal,” Melton said. “There’s been a lot of clutch hitting and, of course, our pitching performances have been good.
