The Southern Financial Group Ardmore Cardinals took to the road on Thursday, coming away with a nine-inning victory over OKC Brassfield 11-10.
The Cardinals (23-13) relied on several offensive outbursts, namely a key two-run home run by Blake Campo in the sixth inning, to build enough of a lead to hold off a late rally attempt by Brassfield.
Leading 9-4 after the sixth, Ardmore watched its deficit shrink by the inning as Brassfield put together back-to-back three-run innings, with each featuring a home run.
“We got some run support to move ahead, but Hunter Evans just didn’t have his best stuff,” Cardinals assistant coach Bubba Tamez said. “It didn’t help that we made a few errors and they had a couple big homers.”
It made an ugly box score of what had been a well-pitched game to that point. Starter C.J. Gregory threw five solid innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out six.
Gregory would go on to earn the win.
“C.J. took a few innings to settle in, but he did well,” Tamez said.
Offensively, the team also got contributions from Caleb McDonald, who was 2-for-2 with a double, and got a big boost from a three-run triple by Chase Crites. Cade Carter also added a triple.
Carson McPherson came in and struck out the side in the ninth inning to earn the save.
Ardmore will play the Midwest City Outlaws today in a doubleheader at Rose State College, starting at 6 p.m.
