Who will get the touches in the Madill backfield this season?

Coach Milton Cooper said as many as eight to 10 backs are in the running for carries in the Madill offense. That’s a big change from the two bell cow backs Madill has been graced with the past four seasons in Darryl Fields and Caleb Muncrief.

“We’ve got them from sophomores to seniors,” Cooper said. “We obviously have to change things up because of what Caleb brought us. It’s running back by committee.”

Madill opened camp this week with fewer questions at other key offensive positions. Three offensive linemen — Levi Holliday, Gage Goff and Sotero Trevino — return for the Wildcats, and senior quarterback Paten Bond enters his second year as starter.

Bond, a All-Ardmoreite first-team selection as a junior, had more than 2,300 all-purpose yards in 2011. He’ll be an even bigger focal point with the graduation of Muncrief and receiver Holden Cass, each of which were All-Ardmoreite Super Team picks.

“We’re expecting great things from him offensively,” Cooper said. “Paten has got to play a bigger role and I think people know that. That’s gonna open that door for some of those guys they haven’t seen before.”

As for the defense, Cooper says the strength will be in the linebacking corps, where Holliday and Goff — both seniors — will anchor the Wildcats.
Holliday and Goff are the top two returning tacklers for the Wildcats.

“They’re both bigger, faster and stronger,” Cooper said. “They had a really good summer, have been to several camps. They’re two good football players and even better young men.”
