Our Dad was an amazing person and left an indelible mark on all our lives. He is greatly loved and will be terribly missed. We were incredibly fortunate to have him as a father.
Eugene was born to Mr. Bliss Albro VanGundy and Mrs. Pearl Josephine (Nelson) VanGundy at Osborne, Kansas, on November 18, 1921. Eugene graduated from high school in Osborne, Kansas. He attended John Brown University for two years and then completed a bachelor’s degree in education from Oklahoma State University. He served as a United States Marine Corps Aviator in World War II and in the Korean War. As a dive bomber pilot, he flew the maximum number of missions allowed. Through both wars, he flew over 180 missions and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart and numerous other awards and honors. He married Miss Geneva Stiner on March 5, 1965.
Prior to retiring from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), he spent nine years working with development of the Concorde airplane and was the first American to pilot it.
Eugene was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ardmore and of the Military Officers Association of America. His hobbies were camping, cabinet making, wood working, traveling, eating (especially ice cream and M&M’s) and numerous family activities. He loved animals, especially horses and birds. He was always ready to go for work or play. He had a rich and abundant life and embraced life to the fullest. We shall miss his joy, his laughter, his radiant smile, his sense of humor and the immense love he brought to our lives.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Dorothy Woodson.
He is survived by his wife, Geneva VanGundy, of the home; three sons, Rodney VanGundy and wife, Susan of Oklahoma City, Okla., Martin VanGundy of Noble, Okla., and Thomas VanGundy of Portland, Oregon; three daughters, Billie Denise Williams and husband, Wayne of Lone Grove, Okla., Sherri Hamblin and husband, David of Lone Grove, Okla., and Doryce Miller and husband, Dan of McAlester, Okla.; six grandchildren, Steven VanGundy, Amanda Turbes, Ashley Osterman, Paige Fichter, Gabe Miller and Kara Miller; great-grandchildren, Christopher VanGundy, Zachary VanGundy, and Ryder Osterman, Isla Osterman and Dylan Turbes; one sister, Virginia Johnson; and one brother, Arthur VanGundy.
