  • After four weeks on the road, the Lone Grove Longhorns will have their first home game this Friday at Longhorn Field when they host the Atoka Wampus Cats for Homecoming.
According to Lone Grove coach Kenny Ridley, they knew about the issue last spring, and he used the scheduling mishap to build some leadership and depth at key positions.
"We could see at the end of the school year that this was going to be a problem," Ridley said. "So I told the players that it would be a difficult situation to get through without strong senior leadership. We had some early injuries that hurt our plan, but for the most part, the upperclassmen have risen to the challenge.
"We didn't play as well at Marlow as we would have liked. And in week 3, we got beat by a very talented Frederick team. To be 2-2 heading into our fifth game is not as well as we would have liked, but we can live with it."
Ridley was particularly proud of the way his team responded between weeks 3-4. The Longhorns were shut out by Frederick 55-0 in week 3, but rebounded, went to Sulphur, and came away with a 24-14 victory over the Bulldogs to open District 3A-4 action.
Ridley added that the players have shown good maturity on the road the first four weeks. During the process, he said the team's physicality has improved.
"I was proud of their resolve after the Frederick game," Ridley said. "We knew that Sulphur had gone to Marlow and beat them pretty good. That was a common opponent, and we wanted to match Sulphur's physicality and intensity, and I believe we did that when we played them.
"The players were receptive to what we were telling them. Hopefully, being at home will be a nice change and it will provide a positive outcome."
Lone Grove will celebrate Homecoming before the game against Atoka.
