  • The 2nd annual Shop with Cops Rodeo will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Hardy Murphy Coliseum.
The event includes a Team Roping Jackpot with $3,500 added money, as well as Junior Barrels for ages 14 and under and Mutton Bustin' for ages 6 and under. Calls open today. Riders should contact Big L Production at (580) 276-5606. Youth can register for events at the door.
The rodeo will also be highlighted by the crowning of the 2012 Shop with Cops Rodeo Queen. Candidates seeking this year's title include: Rylee Cobb, Keely Ingle and Michaella Saunders.
The rodeo is the primary fundraiser for Shop with Cops sponsored by Ardmore Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #108 during the Christmas season. The program provides children who are victims or crimes or simply less fortunate to enjoy the holidays by receiving $100 cash to spend while "shopping with a cop." The Shop with Cops event is also highlighted by pre-shopping festivities at the police department and the opportunity to ride to and from shopping in a police car with lights and sirens activated.
FOP President Phil Shepard said the goal of Shop with Cops is not only to provide Christmas gifts but provide officers with a way to "establish and build positive relationships with the children served by the program."
Children selected for the program are age 15 and younger. Each child is allowed to purchase toys, clothing and even gifts for other family members.
"Last year we had the good fortune to serve 300 children. We are hoping this year to take even more than 300 children shopping. Our ultimate goal, of course, is to be able to take every child whose name is submitted shopping," Shepard said.
Since Shop with Cops was founded in 1990, FOP members donate off duty time each year to shop with the children. But Shepard said Shop with Cops relies on fundraisers, like the rodeo, donations and volunteers to make the event successful.
