Plans are being made for an upcoming contest to design a new flag for the City of Wilson. The flag will help commemorate the 100-year birthday of Wilson, which will be celebrated starting in 2013 and running through 2014.
The contest will run from November 2012 through April 2013 at which point a flag will be chosen by a committee representing the historical society, Wilson city officials and the citizens of Wilson.
The goal of the Wilson Historical Society and Museum is to have the flags hanging on poles throughout the city in time for the 2013 Wilson Fall Festival. The winning artist will receive a free Wilson flag, plaque and a cash/savings bond prize. Two extra plaques will be made — one to hang in the museum and the other in City Hall. To help fund the contest, the historical society is seeking sponsors. Sponsors may be businesses, organizations or individuals. The donations will provide a cash prize for the winning artist and pay for modest contest expenditures. The suggested range of sponsorships is from $25 to $500.
Once the flag design is selected, anyone with an interest in Wilson will have the opportunity to purchase a Wilson city flag.
The deadline for sponsorship is Nov. 15, 2012. The sponsorship can be paid at that time or half can be paid on that date with the remainder due no later than Jan. 31, 2013. Checks can be made out to the Wilson Historical Society and mailed to the museum at 1270 8th Street, Wilson, OK, 73463.
The contest will begin Nov. 1 and is open to all ages.
