A 20-year-old Ardmore man is behind bars pending the posting of a $1.5 million bond while he awaits formal charges accusing him of stabbing a local man to death at a Lake Murray Drive trailer park early Monday.
District Attorney Craig Ladd said late Tuesday afternoon Thomas Houser was currently detained on the high dollar bond granted on "an officer's affidavit for detention." Ladd said he expected Ardmore Police Department investigators to present their reports to him "probably" sometime today, which would lay out APD's evidence that Houser was responsible for the murder of 50-year-old Spender Hales Jr.
Officers were called to Hales' residence in at trailer park located in the 900 block of Lake Murray Drive about 7:45 a.m. Monday. Police Chief Keith Mann said officers discovered Hales' body lying face down in the front yard. The case was immediately labeled a homicide and Mann said evidence indicated the attack against Hale had actually occurred inside the residence. Information, including Hale's name and how he died, were withheld Monday pending the notification of family members.
Tuesday Sgt. Ryan Hunnicutt said Houser was taken into custody about 6 p.m. and booked into the Carter County Detention Center pending a charge of first-degree murder.
Asked about a motive for the slaying Hunnicutt said, "That is still being sorted out," adding the investigation remained ongoing.
