  • Charles Hawkins, 83, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, October 8th. Funeral services will be at First United Methodist Church in Healdton, Monday October 15, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. under direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Duncan (Okla.) Cemetery.
All visitation will be at the Grantham Velma Chapel on Sunday, and the family will be there from 4 -5 p.m. to receive friends.
Charles Bartow Hawkins, Jr. was born in 1928, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, to Charles and Norma. He married Bonnie Jean Redick on September 4, 1976, in Duncan. She preceded him in death in 2009.
Charles graduated from Muskogee High School in 1946, and entered the United States Army. He served in the 82nd Airborne Division, and after his military service, he entered junior college and started his career with Skelly Oil Company (later Getty Oil Company). His 36 year career with Skelly began in Tulsa, and his career stops along the way included Eunice, New Mexico, Velma, Oklahoma, and then Pampa, Texas, where he retired as Plant Superintendent in 1983. Upon retirement, Charles and Bonnie settled in at the "Bar Jean Ranch" in Healdton.
Charles was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir, served as a liturgist and volunteered for the Homebound Communion Ministry. He also enjoyed serving as an auxiliary volunteer for the Healdton Hospital for many years with Bonnie, and his sister, Nancy.
Charles was deadly accurate with a croquet mallet, and he was known to burst into song at a moment's notice in any setting. He could melt your heart with a warm smile like no other, and the gentle utterance of "God bless you." He touched countless people in his life, and will be dearly missed.
Charles was blessed with and is survived by his daughter, Charla Gordon, who very recently lost her husband, Cliff Gordon. He was also blessed with and is survived by a son by marriage, Robert "Bob"Redick and wife, June, of Upland California; three grandchildren, Jason Gordon and wife, Emily, Scott Gordon and wife, Karen, all of Iowa, and K.C. Costello and husband, Keegan, of California; and five great grandchildren, Broderick, Addison, Luke and Levi Gordon, and Darby Costello. He is also survived by two sisters, Norma Anderson of Muskogee, and Nancy Poteet of Healdton; and numerous nieces and nephews
