  • Ardmore native, Harold Ray “Sonny” Smith, died Wednesday, October 24, 2012, while a patient at Duncan Regional Hospital, Duncan, Oklahoma. Born to the late David and Nell (James) Smith, September 28, 1939, at Ardmore; he was 73 years and 26 days of age.

  • Ardmore native, Harold Ray "Sonny" Smith, died Wednesday, October 24, 2012, while a patient at Duncan Regional Hospital, Duncan, Oklahoma. Born to the late David and Nell (James) Smith, September 28, 1939, at Ardmore; he was 73 years and 26 days of age.
    Harold was a graduate of Dickson High School and received a Business Associates Degree from Murray State College. He and the love of his life, Sara Jane Bettes, were married in May of 1961, at Gainesville, Texas. They were the parents of a son and three daughters.
    In construction for 27 years he was the owner of Smith Construction Company and was involved in the construction of the Ardmore's Best Western Hotel, Family Dollar stores, Sirloin Stockade, Staple Super Store, Comet Cleaners, General Nutrition Center, Hallmark Gifts, Creative Life Center and many other homes and businesses here and in the surrounding area.
    A 32nd degree Mason, Harold was a member of the New Hope Church of God. His life truly exemplified that of service to ones' fellow man. He had been a member of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol for three years and the Ardmore Police Department for seven years, attaining the rank of Detective. He had also served in the U. S. Army and Army Reserve. A Staff Sergeant, he had served during the Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm; and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the NCO Professional Development Ribbon and the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal.
    The times he enjoyed most, were those spent with his family, he dearly loved them all. Those to forever cherish 'Precious Memories' include his loving wife, Sara Smith of the home; two daughters, Sheryl Massingill and her husband, Raymond, Deborah Michael Smith and a son; two brothers, David Buddy Smith and his wife, Kay, Jimmy Smith and his wife, JoAnne; sisters, Mary Riggs and her husband, Bob, and Glenda Harvin; grandchildren, Kara Michelle Hilton and her husband, Brent, Shane Michael Kirk and Delores Silva, Joshua Adam Stewart, Christopher James Scott and his wife, Amanda Renee, Amanda Marie Scott, and Susan Michelle Eubank; great-grandchildren, Azya Lanae Scott, Braden Paul Bronegen, Cheyanne Riley Baston, Jude Michael Eubank, Austin Shane Kirk and ChristaLynn Journey Scott.
    His parents; and a precious daughter, Vickie Lynn Smith, preceded him in death.
    Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, October 29, 2012, at the New Hope Church of God, conducted by Rev. Robert Peterson. Burial with full Military Honors will follow at the Provence Cemetery.
