  • Eddie William Richards, 51, passed away at his home on October 30, 2012. Funeral services for Eddie will be at held 2 p.m. on Monday, November 5, 2012, in The Chapel at Griffin-Hillcrest Funeral Home of Ardmore with Reverend Dan Patman officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, Ardmore, Okla.
Eddie was born at El Centro, California on Feb. 5, 1961. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dovie Brown Richards Furrh; his first father, Benny William Richards; and his biological and second father, Richard Sampson Furrh.
Eddie served in the United States Marine Corps from 1981 through 1984. He left the service as a Lance Corporal E3. In 1995, he joined the Oklahoma National Guard Transportation Unit #1245 in Ardmore as a Specialist E4. He transferred to the United States Army Reserve Unit in Ardmore in 1999, where he was promoted to Sergeant E5. In October 2002, he transferred back to OKNG Unit #1245 and the following February was activated and deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom until March 12, 2004, four weeks before his mother died of cancer.
Eddie graduated from Dickson High School in 1980. He earned an Associate Degree in Business from Murray State College in 1999, graduating with honors. After he returned from Iraq, Eddie again attended college, this time hoping to enter the medical field. He was also just a few hours shy of earning his Bachelor's Degree. Before he entered the medical field, he joined Jacobson Logistics as a fleet dispatcher and then was promoted to fleet manager, which is what he was doing when he retired on disability because of his health.
Eddie contracted ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), better known as Lou Gehrig's disease, while serving his country in Iraq. The disease progressed slowly at first and then accelerated periodically when under stressful conditions. Through it all, Eddie maintained a positive attitude and was an inspiration to those who knew him.
He leaves behind his wife, Shelly Richards, of the home; son, Ryan Richards of Shawnee, Okla.; son, Rand Richards of Euless, Texas; daughter Rebecca Richards of Euless, Texas; brother, Chris Richards of Amarillo, Texas; sister, Leeanne Kelly of Ardmore; half-sisters, Leda Furrh of Marietta, Linda Pruett of Marietta, and Laquitta Furrh of Rubottom; and step-mother, Bernice Furrh of Ardmore.
Serving as pallbearers will be Ryan Richards, Rand Richards, Glen Daniel, Trevor Kay, Chris Richards and Harold Chancellor. Honorary pallbearer will be Robert Boston.
