  • FOX — The Fox Foxes kept their playoff dreams alive and their record untarnished with a 28-22 victory over the Merritt Oilers Friday night in Class B opening-round playoff action at the Fox Den.
The Foxes were clinging to a six-point lead with the Oilers driving late in the fourth. Merritt snapped the ball with 1 second remaining hoping to tie the contest or win with a PAT. Fox's William Lovely tackled the Oiler ball carrier at the Fox 5-yard line to end the Merritt drive and preserve the victory.
The Foxes will host Keota in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Fox (11-0), ranked No. 3 in Class B, held the Merritt running attack in check by allowing just 94 rushing yards on 46 carries. The Oilers were able to make a game of it by racking up 224 passing yards.
The Foxes scored twice in the second quarter. A 17-yard pass from quarterback Taylor Townsend to Seth Argo and a 16-yard run by Townsend gave Fox a 14-6 halftime advantage.
Townsend hit Lovely with a 7-yard scoring toss in the third as the Foxes took a 22-6 lead into the final 12 minutes.
A 2-yard touchdown run by Seth Argo ended the Foxes' scoring. Two fourth-quarter touchdowns with accompanying two-point conversions kept the Oilers in the game.
Townsend finished with 175 rushing yards on 27 carries and one touchdown and was 10-of-20 passing for two touchdowns for the Foxes. Seth Argo had 89 all-purpose yards (58 rushing, 31 receiving).
Lovely led the Foxes with 51 yards receiving on five catches. Lovely and Keaton Argo each added an interception on defense.
