  • The Shawnee Police Department's Gang Task Force on Friday tracked down and apprehended a Shawnee man who was sought by Oklahoma City police in connection with a shooting in the metro area.
Shawnee Police Lt. Mason Wilson, commander of the local Gang Task Force, said Shawnee officers first located the reported get-away vehicle connected to that shooting and then worked leads to find the suspect in Shawnee and make the arrest.
Wilson said Charles Bennett, 26, was tracked to a home at 1324 E. Highland, where he was taken into custody without incident.
Bennett was wanted in connection with a shooting that occurred recently in Oklahoma City, Wilson said, although he had no details about that case.
Local task force members turned Bennett over to the Oklahoma City Gang Unit Friday afternoon and he was booked into the Oklahoma County jail. It appears no formal charges have been filed.
Wilson said Cpl. James Wood and Cpl. David Gonzales had been working since last week to track down the suspect, with them first finding a bullet-riddled vehicle that allegedly fled the scene of the Oklahoma City shooting, along with its driver. In working the case, the Oklahoma City Gang Unit contacted Shawnee officials in search of Bennett. He had reportedly resided in Shawnee at one time, although they found that he no longer lived at the home.
The officers worked leads, which led them to find Bennett at the home on Highland Street Friday, where Sgt. Darryl Bordeaux, Cpl. Shawn Parsons and Gonzales were able to take him into custody.
Bennett also had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant from Pottawatomie County for possession of controlled substance.
The work of the local Gang Task Force in this case also resulted in Wilson recommending the team for a commendation.
"Cpl. Wood and Cpl. Gonzales did an outstanding job of tracking down leads to assist OKC Gang Unit with apprehension of a shooting suspect," Wilson wrote. "All of the officers did a great job of showing the working relationship between the Shawnee Police Gang Task Force and the OKC Gang Unit. The officers should be commended for their time and effort."
Attempts to get more details about the Oklahoma City shooting incident for which Bennett is a suspect could not be obtained Friday from Oklahoma City police.
