A Good Samaritan told police Monday he opened his home to two men he believed were homeless, but instead of a thank you the pair stole his checkbook and his cash.

The victim said he met the duo at a local shelter Friday. He said the two men told him they had no place to stay and he invited them to spend the night at his apartment, located in the 1200 block of 6th Avenue.

The twosome accepted the victim's offer of overnight lodging. But gratitude wasn't on the duo's agenda. The next day they left, taking the victim's checkbook and $50 in cash.
