WILSON — Wilson hung on down the stretch to defeat Elmore City-Pernell 67-61 in the Black and Gold Classic Championship game played Saturday night at the Wilson High School.

Wilson (8-1) jumped to a 21-11 lead after the first period with Blayke Hunziker and C.J. Ramsey lighting things up from the outside. Elmore City however, outscored Wilson 22-18 in the second period. That sent the teams to the locker room with the Eagles ahead 39-33.

Elmore City-Pernell had the advantage in the third, outscoring Wilson 16-14, tightening the game to 53-49 heading into the fourth.

“We talked about having to overcome obstacles early in our season, and we learned how to do that this week,” Wilson coach David McGuire said. “Blayke was sick last night and did not play. He was some better tonight, but he wasn’t 100 percent. So we had some people step up and got the job done for us.

“This is an exciting win for us. It’s great for our community. It feels like we are finallly starting to come together as a team. This was a great team win.”

Hunziker had a game-high 23 points, including six 3-point buckets, to lead the Eagles. C.J. Ramsey added 20 points, including three 3-pointers. Hunziker and Ramsey were named Co-Most Valuable Players of the tournament. Wilson junior Keedric Emerson was also named to the All-Tournament team.  Edgar Gonzalez paced the Badgers with 22 points.
