Services for Ruby L. Thurman of Marietta, Okla. will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, in the Chapel of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home, Marietta, with Bro. Murray McMurray officiating. Interment in Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta, will be under the direction of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Marietta.
Born Jan. 15, 1928 in the New Hope community of Love County, Mrs. Thurman was the daughter of Arthur and Helen Stephens Hughes. She passed away Saturday, Dec. 15, in Lake Country Nursing Center, Marietta, at the age of 84.
A resident of Love County most of her life, Mrs. Thurman was a homemaker, in addition to working at Marietta Sportswear and also in home health. She and Melvin G. Thurman were married in Gainesville, Texas on April 3, 1948, and he preceded her in death on March 3, 1994. An excellent seamstress, Mrs. Thurman also enjoyed quilting, canning, going to garage sales and collecting things. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Beverly Sue Thurman in 1955 and Barbara Thurman Hogan in 1998; granddaughter, Holly Michelle Thurman in 1981; grandson, Jeffery Todd Stofel in 1987; four brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Marilyn Thurman of Marietta; daughter and son-in-law, Janie and Darrell Cain of Thackerville, Okla.; brother and sister-in-law, Earl and Elaine Hughes of Gainesville, Texas; two sisters, Ada Bell Ramsey of Terral, Okla. and Inez Crawford of Ryan, Okla.; six grandchildren, Chris Stofel, Brandon and Rebecca Hicks, Dustie and Jack Jones, Cody Cain, Brock Thurman and Jordan and Kenny Mathews; seven great-grandchildren, Evan, Karli, Haley, Breighana, Marshall, Mikayla and Tanner; a special nephew, Herman Bruce of Marietta; numerous other nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Biscuit.
Serving as bearers will be Chris Stofel, Brandon Hicks, Evan Hicks, Cody Cain, Jack Jones and Kenny Mathews. Honorary bearers are Brock Thurman, Dr. J.T. O'Connor, Dr. Joel Sabangan, Carolyn Willis and staff of Victory Home Health and Mays Home Health.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 7 p.m. today.
