Time will tell what the future holds for Zoey Taylor Day. But given initial Tuesday morning efforts, she may very well have a competitive trait.
Zoey came into this world at 7:48 a.m. and in doing so, was the first baby born in 2013 at Mercy Hospital Ardmore. She is also Justin and Maia Day's first child.
"I was supposed to come in at 5 p.m. today (Tuesday) and be induced," Maia said, "but she wanted to ring in the New Year. Once we found out there was another lady here, it kind of became a competition. We beat her by 15 minutes."
"We were in the waiting room cheering her on," grandmother Dawn Jones added.
Zoey measured a healthy 19 ½ inches and weighed 6 pounds and 8 ounces.
"It hasn't really hit home," Justin said. "It was new and it was just kind of a shock. I just stood there and stared. But it wasn't so bad."
The Days reside in Ardmore and have been married for two years. Justin is originally from Ardmore and Maia refers to herself as a Navy brat. They said they went through the whole alphabet and got to the Z's before arriving at a name for their first child, a healthy beautiful girl.
Maia added there were a number of emotions she went through when she first held her daughter.
"It was a relief," she said. "It was kind of surreal. It was exciting and nerve-wracking at once. It's really neat that she was the first baby born today."
