Mannsville — Road conditions that have been plaguing town residents will improve thanks to a grant and financial help from XTO Energy.
Officials from XTO presented the town with a $25,000 check, which will serve as matching funds for a $127,000 Community Block Development Grant from the Department of Commerce. Mannsville applied for the grant through the Southern Oklahoma Development Association.
The CDBG grant was awarded in October, but the town was in need of financial assistance. Shonda Barnes, Mannsville City Treasurer, requested financial assistance from several companies and XTO stepped up to the plate.
“When we saw there was an opportunity to help a community that was helping themselves, we wanted to do what we could,” Mike Todd, XTO Regional Manager of Public and Government Affairs, said. “The funds will be used for road repairs and it was an outstanding opportunity for XTO to become involved.”
Barnes said work on town streets will begin this fall and it is a much-needed endeavor.
“We owe a debt of gratitude to SODA for doing an excellent job in writing and securing the grant, to County Commissioner Melvin Farmer who has agreed to provide almost all labor and equipment to do the work on Mannsville city roads, and Madill Community Work Center for providing offender labor to do the preparatory work on the ditches and drainages and especially to XTO for its generosity,” Barnes said.
She also noted that the improvement to the infrastructure in Mannsville is an example of different entities coming together to improve a community.
Mayor Becky Broughton noted in addition to the donation, XTO has had a positive impact on the community.
“Although there are several people instrumental in the town receiving the grant, XTO, through their generosity, made it a reality,” she said. “XTO has been a lifeline to our community. Since their arrival in our area, several new businesses have opened, sales for local stores and restaurants have increased and revenue from sales tax has almost doubled.”
