  • Tickets on sale for MLK Banquet

  • The Ardmore Branch of the NAACP will have a Dr. Martin Luther King Banquet, which is slated to start at 5 p.m., Jan. 26 at the First United Method­ist Church Colvert Ministry Center. Tickets for the event are $25. A banquet table can be purchased for $500.
    The theme for the banquet is "Diversity and its Discontents: T he End of Affirmative Ac tion." An­thony Douglass, President of the Oklahoma NAACP will serve as the keynote speaker.
    Also during the banquet, the Ardmore Chamber of Commerce will be awarded the Community Partner of the Year. Performing at the event will be Iyona Sims and the youth from the FUMC.
    The NAACP is hoping to raise $10,000 to help manage the expenses of the banquet. Proceeds from the banquet will be used to fund an At-Risk Youth Program and the Historically Black College Tour for area high school juniors and seniors. The NAACP cites its mission is to reach at risk youth in the community providing positive futures and reducing behaviors while enhancing the effectiveness of the people who live and work with them.
