LONE GROVE — Turnovers and missed shooting opportunities doomed the Lone Grove girls Thursday night, as they fell to the Hugo Buffaloes 51-38 in opening round action of the Longhorn Invitational played at the Gary Scott Center.

In other girls games, Walters defeated Comanche 77-42, Marlow beat Talihina 48-45 and Washington rolled past Idabel 63-32. Lone Grove takes on Idabel this afternoon at 1 p.m. in the consolation bracket.

Hugo (8-5) used a strong defense to gain the upper hand early. The Buffaloes forced 14 first half turnovers as they took a 20-11 lead after the opening period and added one to that in the second to go up 29-19 at intermission.

Haley McCutchen paced the Longhorns with nine points, including 7 of 10 from the line.

"We continue to have our problems scoring points," Lone Grove coach Jeff Word said. "And when you have troubles hanging onto the basketball like we did tonight, it turns into a long game. You can't make ballhandling mistakes against a good, athletic team like Hugo.

"We did a good job defensively, and we tried to slow the game down offensively. But Hugo is the best team we have played, and it would not surprise me if they don't win this tournament."

Lone Grove (5-4) rallied to within five at 30-25 early in the third. But the Buffaloes spread the floor, finished on a 10-1 run and took a 40-26 advantage to the fourth.

Rayshionne Smith led nine Hugo scorers with 17 points, and Sara Simpson chipped in 13 points.
