  • LONE GROVE — After a successful season in Class 4A, it seemed natural that the Lone Grove Longhorns softball team would produce players that moved on to the collegiate level.
Alexis Lewis was the first such athlete on Wednesday, signing a scholarship to play for Northern Oklahoma College in Enid. At a ceremony held in the Lone Grove library, Lewis signed her letter of intent surrounded by family and friends, and afterwards struggled to hold back tears of joy.
"I'm the first in my family to get a scholarship," she said. "And that means a lot."
Lewis earned hers, traveling to Enid for a tryout and getting a call from the coaching staff with the news.
Lewis will head to Enid in the summer, where she expects to play third base. The senior batted .277 with 27 runs batted in and seven doubles for the Longhorns in the fall, earning First-Team All-Ardmoreite Honors.
"I've gotten really close with a girl from Norman," Lewis said. "I'm really looking forward to meeting new people."
Lone Grove coach Jimmy Miller said that Northern will be getting a good one in Lewis.
"Northern is getting a great player in Alexis," Miller said. "She's going to get after it, playing solid defense at third and hit the ball hard with power.
"(It's a) Great opportunity for both Northern and her."
