Bill McLaughlin, Carter County Commissioner for District 1 has announced his retirement. Jan. 31 has been set as his final day in office pending a response from the Oklahoma Public Employees Retirement System, Cynthia Harmon, County Clerk said. Harmon said should the paperwork not be set in place, McLaughlin will hold office into February.

A reception for McLaughlin is scheduled between 2-4 p.m., Jan. 31 in the commissioners' meeting room in the county annex building No. 1.

McLaughlin began a career working with the county in January 1993 and was appointed commissioner for District 1 in December 2003. He has held the position of commissioner since that time.

Harmon said Gov. Mary Fallin would need to call for a special election to fill the vacancy in District 1. The county has contacted the governor's office and is waiting for a response to determine when the election will take place.
