  • Funeral services for longtime Ardmoreite, Lennie Belle Shelton, 105, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2013, in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church conducted by Reverend Willie J. Tiller, pastor. Burial will follow in the Clearview Cemetery next to her late husband and son.
    Daughter of the late Manuel Kemp and Rosa Rogers Kemp, Mrs. Shelton was born at Berwyn, Oklahoma, on the 19th day of January 1908. A resident of Southern Oklahoma all of her life, she was a graduate of Douglass High School, the Class of 1929 and then attended Langston University for two years.
    She was married to Wade Shelton, November 18, 1932, at Ardmore; he preceded her in death, June 1, 1973. A faithful member of the First Baptist Church, Mrs. Shelton had been a member of the church choir, the Mission Society and had served as President of the Guiding Light Circle. Active in the community, Mrs. Shelton had served on the Big 5 Weatherization Board as President and member; the Ladies of Action Club and the Classique Federated Club. During her working career she had been a nurse's aide at Memorial Hospital of Southern Oklahoma as well as a devoted homemaker.
    On the 23rd day of January 2013, just four-days after celebrating her 105th birthday, Lennie Belle Shelton, laid down her earthly cares, and took flight for her heavenly home.
    Mrs. Shelton was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wade Shelton; her son, Melvin James Jones; three brothers and two sisters.
    Survivors include her granddaughter, Briana Jones, Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; a great-grandson, Devon Trejo; her adopted son, John Bryant of Ardmore; six nephews, Ray Sutton, Wade Shelton, Ray Shelton, Howard Shelton, James Shelton and Ronald Shelton; five nieces, Verlene Campbell, Mary Lee Davis, Jean Young, Margaret McKinney, Joyce Settles; and a host of extended family and friends.
    Services have been entrusted to Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home and Crematory. Viewing hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, at the funeral home.
