  • HEALDTON — Turner's Andi McGill had 20 points, and Conner Harmon had 19 points to help lead the Falcons to a 49-42 victory over Davis to capture the Healdton Bulldog Bash girls championship Saturday night.
The championship game was a nailbiter from start to finish. Although Turner led almost from the start, Davis made a run late in the game. After leading by as many as 11 with 4 minutes left in the game, the Wolves continued to rally.
A 3-point bucket by Davis' Shaynee Martin cut the Falcon lead to 45-42 with 44 seconds remaining. On the ensuing inbounds play by Turner, McGill took the ball coast-to-coast and scored an unguarded layup that gave the Falcons some breathing room at 47-42. Following a Davis missed field goal, Harmon grabbed the rebound and was fouled. She knocked down both charity tosses for the winning margin.
"We had struggled at the free-throw line earlier in the game, but with the game on the line, everyone stepped up and hit them," Turner coach Shane Hill said. "Defense was the big reason for our win tonight. And nobody did it better than Sierra Parker. We put her on their leading scorer (Kendal Rogers), and the kind of job she did was remarkable.
"This was probably the best defensive game we have played all year."
Turner (20-3), ranked No. 8 in Class A, took an 11-7 lead after the first period and maintained that advantage at intermission by leading 22-18. Action was stopped twice in a physical third period to clean up blood on the floor.
The Falcons outscored Davis 10-9 in the third and headed to the fourth with a 32-27 lead.
"Davis is a very good team, and they are improving every week," Hill said. "I was very proud of the girls for the way they kept their composure and played well for all four quarters."
Davis (8-5) got a strong second half from Jaycee Sanders, who scored all her 13 points following the break. Shaynee Martin led the Wolves with 17 points, including four 3-point buckets and 5 of 5 from the line.
